Academic Assessment

Closing the Loop

Closing the loop encompasses analyzing results from the assessment of outcomes, using results to make changes to improve student learning, and re-assessing outcomes in order to determine the effect those changes had on student learning. (NOVA, 2017)

Upon completing the development of the action plan, it is time to implement the action plan AND any key assessments necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of the action plan. Closing the loop in assessment is the most important component but often the least practiced. It is a means to determine if action plans have been successful in improving learning. This may require repeated assessments over time to document improvement in learning. (Ebersole, 2015)
